I've been thinking about putting different barrel on my wife's .308 so she'll have something lighter recoiling to practice with. Looking at some load data, the 22 br looks like it pretty well copies the .223 AI, spits 50's out at 3500 with relatively mild doses of powder.

The only concern would be how it feed from a .308 mag, though it being a single shot wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

the 22BR you will have to make your brass for. You had to neck down a 6mmBR. I had one til the barrel pucked. They are sweet...
as far as the mag this might help:

Sounds like a PITA. When I add the up the cost of a reamer, dies, brass and barrel, I could build another .223 AI for about the same $.

Oh well, seamed like a good idea.

Dang, I should never try and type and talk to somebody at the same time....
I edited the above post to make it a little more clear...

I suppose that would be an option, but I have a 22-250 take off tube that could be used as a donor, and the key is minimal recoil, so the 22 wins out spitting 50's 3500.

My 6mmBR's are both chunks and spit 65/68gr pills at just over 3300 FPS. Recoil is nothing (but one tips the scales at about 14 lbs and the other at about 9)

Have thought about the 22-250, but am thinking with the added powder burn it get's past the most performance with least powder consumed of the .223 or 22 br. Then again cheaper brass pays for powder, and it's all a wash. I'm also thinking she'll be shooting rounds in the 100's not 1000's so 22-250 isn't a bad way to go.

The procrastination shit, isn't nearly as rewarding as banging around with something.

I'm 400 pokes through my 1-7.7" Kreiger less a patch and I'm not fretting much of anything. On a .473" boltface, the 22-250/AI is tough to whip up on. There's 100 pokes of F/F(3200fps) and 300 with 75's at 3450fps.

I easily prefer the 223AI,but don't get mad yanking the trigger on the .473" boltface.................

Have you considered a .243 or .243AI? It'd be a big jump down the hill from her .308, while still presenting you (her) with some great bullet options. Use a 1-8" twist barrel and you could play at great distances with Amax, VLD, and TSX options. Recoil would be less than the .308, and prolly close to nada.

I ran into a pard tonight that showed me what a 115gr Berger looks like. It got me all twiterpated.....

With bullet choices ranging from 55gr BTs to 115VLDs, the .243 gives a guy more options than he's got time to fully explore. I was indoctrinated as a pup to hate the 6mms because of their hostile takeover of the quarter-bores in the '50s. I have to admit they're better than ever though with today's bullets and fuels, and I've got a few of them around the house now....

The 308 is like the 30-'06,in order to make them shine, you gotta neck the suck out of them.

A guy could get into the habit of punishing shit with the .243" 105'Max...but I prefer the .224" 75'Max for high volume fun...............

That's one to remember....

Keeping her easy, I'd opt for a 260 or 7mm-08.....22-250AI has lotsa promise too.
Any of the three are proven killers and easier on the shoulder than the factory chamber.

Poking a 260 or 7-08 at anything on this continent is a recipe for success. Cheap to shoot...accurate and easy on the ladies and tenderfoots....
