6.5PRC on a Montana WSM?

Has anyone put this combination together yet? I’m thinking hard about it. With a SS 3-9 on top, it seems like it would be an easy-shooting, sweet way to get a 7 3/4 pound rifle to launch the 147 ELD at 2950 fps plus.

is it worth the hassle over just buying a Fieldcraft Creedmoor?

Probably would depend on which stock you preferred. I could like a Montana with a trim hawk hill tube on it in 6.5 8 twist. Due to shooting lefty I don't dwell long on them though.

I'd take a Montana over a FC any day of the week, but that's just because my hands greatly prefer the Montana's stock.

Does the factory ammo options of the PRC appeal to you? I was taking that into consideration when I built my last 8400 and almost went that route for that reason alone. Been there before, and I just don't shoot factory ammo in my hunting rifles, so went another direction.

I'd say it'd be a great rig, not much that it couldn't handle well.

I went with the modified Lilja contour on my last. While I don't have as much time with it as the factory contour, I'm pretty sure I'd do the same for my next. Something to think about, even though I'm in the minority here on that thought.

I prefer the modified lilja as well.
Didn't add any noticable weight and improved handling, I thought

On an 84M larger in bore size than 22 I do as well. My 223 is factory and perfect, but as the bore gets progressively larger I like them less. My 243AI has the modified contour, which makes it balance about the same as the 223.

But I haven’t owned an 8400 WSM, hence my question.

Agreed on liking the Montana stock. But has anyone PRC’ed one yet. :)

The other option I am considering is putting a Fieldcraft Creed in a Montana stock. That’s easy but I am wondering if the 200 FPS of the PRC is worth it. Accuracy should be similar, and the WSM mag box is long enough to seat the 147 out to the throat and still easily fit the mag box.

Re factory loads, I haven’t fired a factory round in 30 years.

You must be one of those guys that drives a Ferrari with a VW motor? :)

I love my montanas, but the stock is the weakest point as far as ergos and my skeleton.

I lost interest in FC's just because of the Montana ergos. Nothing like them for field work, for me.

I've never had my paws on a FC, but the 84M is my favorite stock...and centerfire.

That stock is made by AG Composites, which is why I'm picking up one of their stocks to throw my Proof Vudoo into, for hunting and such, when I'm not shooting it in matches.

It's amazing when you look at their other direct offerings, which are repellent. The new Mesa one Stick posted looks awesome though. I guess it's design they suck at and construction they've mastered.

I'd rather 7mm 180 ELD at 2600fps(7-08),than a 147 at 2950fps(in anything).

Montucky Whizzum SCREAMS "7mm" to me................

I slicked up a Montana 7WSM. What are you guys running for dies, Redding bushing? .310 good with recent lots of WW?

Or is there some other brand of brass I should be using I don’t know about? ADG or ??

Sweet find. You get it from Josh?

I'm using a set of Forster BR dies and a custom LCD set. Works great.

I've used quite a bit of WW .300 WSM brass to form 7WSM, and it's generally been of very good quality. I prefer it to the 7WSM headstamped WW stuff and Fed brass.

I have gotten bit a couple times recently with standard Redding FL dies. Neck Diameter WAY smaller than it should be, like 15 thou. Nothing like necking a 7mm down to .297 OD then forcing it back over an expander ball. Crazy. Have about had it with standard Reddings, love their bushing dies though.

What bushing with the Winnie 300WSM, that closer to 312 or ??

I’ve used several sets of neck honed Forsters with great results.

Bushing sizing for me,depends on the particulars of the Lot and I'm typically looking to yield .003" constriction on everything.....................

Agreed on 3 thou. Too bad there is that much variation between lots, I am spoiled by Lapua. Haven’t tried Alpha yet, the Lapua in 6BR and 260 refuses to wear out!

I will grab several bags of WW, hopefully same lot number, and go from there.

So about 0.293 - .003 neck tension = .290 bushing needed.

I will def wait for a caliper confirmation, but this gets the mind working. New to bushing dies here.

Are you taking the expander ball out with that honed die or leaving it in? Thank you
Done it both ways. Expander out produces just a tiny bit less runout, though with Forster’s, the expander induces much less runout than other brands have for me. Currently running expander out.
