Got a 1DS mkIII body, I shouldn't have waited so long. For now I'm going to gun my late father's contax/yoshica zeiss glass but will be getting some canon glass in the near future.

I'm thinking about the 24-70 and 100-400 USM and a 1.4x doubler. Seems like it should cover me fairly well, but will I miss the 70-100 range? I savvy the 24-105 giving up a bit to the 24-70. I know I could pair the 24-70 with a 70-200 but don't really want to lug around three lenses to get me into the way out there range. Input on lenses appreciated.

It all depends on what youvare going to be shooting. If you want to do some wide landscapes you might want wider than 24, especially with the 1.3 crop. Sigma makes nice glass too, the ART line in particular is awesome.

I'm surely in the minority but I don't own either of the 24-70 or 24-105. 16-35L f4 for wide stuff, 50ART, then 70-200 2.8, sigma 150-600. A few others mixed in as well but those are my most used.

There are so many good options out there both new and used.

Good choice on the 1ds3, I have had the hots for one for a while now.
Here's my .02, and worth every penny.
Even though it's a FF body, I agree that 24mm is too long to be short enough. I have a 24-105 that I think is a great and under appreciated lens, but I like a little more FOV. I added the 20mm Sigma Art, which is a killer lens, but if I offered any advice it would be to look at the 17-40 which nobody ever complains about and they are a bargain.
The 16-35 is more of the same, but if cost is an issue.....
I think the Sigma Art short zooms should be considered.
I have the 70-200 vs2 and the 100-400 vs 1 and wouldn't want to have to decide between the two. The 100-400 is way more versatile than people consider and I've used mine for portraits, flowers, landscapes as well as wildlife. It's a good lens.
The 70-200 is just damned good.
Another lens I think folks under appreciate is the 100mm Macro. You can find like new copies for 5-600 bucks and its a killer lens IMO. Close ups, portraits and walk around street photography on a FF is hard to beat.
Let's see some shots.........

Killer body(still).

FORGET the 1.4x. I find myself in 17-40 Mode and then jump right to the 100-400 and couldn't say enough good, about both. The 24-105 is certainly viable and rates a thunk. I've had numerous 70-200's,but find that I simply don't shoot within that focal length. I'm either in close,or going long.

I REALLY like the Siggy 35mm/1.4 ART.......................

Not sure if you are still reading this Paul, but stumbled onto this today:

Seems like a steal to me.
Chris,

I just snagged one off of flea bay for a bit under $700 shipped. Well shipped to a freight forwarder, not sure how much it'll be with final delivery.

I'm hoping to make it over to Bahrain for the F1 race. Should be a good opportunity to get used to the lens

I MUSTA got The Fever,as I somehow ended up with (6) 1D-Series bodies...(3) of which are 1D3's and I still LOVE 'em.

Purty much leave the 1D4 slapped upon Big White, but can see fastening the ART 35/1.4 for requisite Bokeh Hero Pics. Hikedfrom Hell to breakfast yesterday and though the water LOOKED "killer",there apparently weren't a feesh for miles. I fucked up and let stubborn get me,until I was outta light for a 2nd move.

Could walk out the front door and have my way,but I hate to soremouth shit that the local kids will be chasin'.....................

With the 1DX III rolled out on the Olympics year, and the new R5 as well, prices are getting really tempting for previous 1D bodies. Good times!

The Fro says the R5 changes everything!

It's far more than I need and want to pay for, even if mirrorless bodies and the R-mount glass appears to be the next step forward. Leaning 1DX or 1DX II as heard tell that Canon won't service the 1D Mk IV or older 1D's. A bit of concern even if you could use one to club baby seals....

I'd STEAL the 1D3 for $430 and never look back and be gunning frames in but a coupla days.

Today were a 1D Weather Sealing Day and they seem to be far from rare in their relative frequency...............(grin)

I need to get the 35 ART but also want the 20mm. I wish i could say I'll be ordering an R5 right away but I won't be. The 5D3 still does a good enough job.

There you go making good fiscal sense in a world of deficit spending.... *grin*

Been looking at Mk IV's for a spell but as noted above, I recently read on fm that Canon is no longer servicing them or their older brethren. Thus the possible shift to a FF 1DX. Have other priorities at present but I see you're getting even for all those 300S leads I've dropped on ya!

LOVE the 35 ART and if a 1D APS-H Sensor puked, there's other places besides Canon,to get The Cure...................

Ditto. They're too deadly to own where I live, probably useless anyway, but I definitely want one. The existence of dot sights makes it very high on the wish-list. Suppressed would be even more fun.

Who'da' thunked that you could buy a Luke Skywalker Laser Pistol?

Everybody NEEDS one. Too fun. No real noise. No recoil and laser flat trajectories.

Slam a 50yd zero on a FF3 3MOA and do some shit..................

Held one about 20 minutes ago and damn near took it home...

Then I remembered that I've got an FN that I rarely shoot, along with a bunch of mags, so the Ruger stayed in the store...

Great... another gun I NEED.

The FN was intriguing, but I might actually buy a Ruger. How does it shoot?

It's straight CHEATING. It's a fucking 22 Speedmire pistole!

FN ergos are FUNKY and fucked up. The Ruger's trigger is VERY suplizingly good and the controls are handy.

Do it...............
