Missing, presumed dead.....
So back, right as they stopped making them, I got a Montana in 7-08 from Whittakers. Great rifle, basically a fly rod with a 1000 yard cast.

I'm thinking I might want more lol. (I don't collect a ton of rifles as a habit)

Looking at Kimber's site - looks like the "new" Montana added weight and I need to go to one of their "sub alpine" or "ascent" rifles to get a lightweight rig. All others are a hair under 7lbs.

I know a guy should just buy a Barrett - but from what I understand, production is halted. I haven't looked used and I'm not looking to buy today or soon.

Just bench racing here.

Wondering - What the going price these days on a used light Montana in 223? Hell, I'd be ok 204 Ruger too. Starting to formulate a desire/budget/savings for a decent upper midwest calling rifle. Yotes mostly in farm field edges/timber so not long, rarely windy. Someone was saying 22Hornet punched K would work - but I like the 223 mobettah.

Kimber dropped the .223 chambering in their Montana series.

One just recently sold on 24hr Campfire for $1175: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/15459076/Searchpage/1/Main/1027949/Words/montana/Search/true/black-friday-special-kimber-montana-223-1175#Post15459076

There is another one for sale on the 'fire, as well. It's a newer model with the greenish stock. His starting price was $1850, but he has since dropped it to $1550. It's still available: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/15450740/1

Lots of shit's changed over the past couple of years it seems. Damn.

I paid 900 new for mine IIRC. The newer/green stock are almost 7lbs - basically like any other rifle, no sense paying a premium for that. Go Sucks at that point I'd think.

I don't dig the 84Ls. Better than the Fieldcraft long action, but they still don't feel like I'm holding a lightning bolt like the 8400 and 84M Montanas do.

The 84L's are exceptional handling and farrrrrrr more svelte/lithe than the 8400's.

Both the montucky and fieldcraft L/A's are junk for most chamberings, due the exceedingly short COAL..............

Have gone 284 Win numerous times,but really think I'd Seven Mouser a 84L with a 8" dupe at 21" for 180/90's..............

Rails? Nope.

Magbox? Yes.

Reduced capacity? Yes.

I'd still be Seven Mouser upon said platform and nobody hates that chambering more than I...............

It is my job to paint purty pictures and that illustrates just how amazingly fucking shitty Kimber 84L COAL "latitude" is................(grin)

You know anything of removing the mag spacer on the 8400 long action or exchanging for a Talkeetna mag box and follower?

Seems they are 3.35 or so but can be opened up to 3.65 or so.

Despite the chunkier profile and added weight over 84L I like the 8400 and it’s stock.

It kisses 105 Hornie HPBT's,right near mag constraints,by literal design. Here it is next to a 180 ELD Smooch and 190 Beer Can Smooch for The Incredible Hulk.

700 COAL being farrrrrrrrrr greater, even in OEM guise.

The Six-Twat Six is the best pitch,in a 84L,upon a full length '06 hull................

I wrongly sold my 223ai Montana to a good friend since I had both a 204 and 22-250ai Montana. I spied a new 223 a couple months ago and passed on it twice but when I read here they dropped it, I righted my wrong for $899. Probably keep it standard but it’s tucked away safely for now.
I knew this place was trouble.

I cured myself of that by selling that to the Lock Smith. Then bought a 7 rem mag. LOL! I do like the Norma 7 rem brass though.

7 RSAUM seems interesting. I’m fond of 7mm, and have a source for Remington brass to hold me over till better becomes available.
An 8.5 twist 7mm barrel could be fun.
But shooting 6.5’s is so much fun.

The ShamWow in AICS Binderless, wouldn't suck. Just impossible to beat a Montucky 7 Whizzum and a .796 BC.

I can't set my Montucky 18" 270 with 105's down..................

I’m pretty fond of my 7 SAUM 8400 Shaen put together for me. Mod8400 Lilja and I prefer that on the 8400s.

Ive had both factory dupe and mod on both 84 and 8400, and the mod contours point a lot better for me. On an 84, I might stay factory though, but it’d be a tough call.

Twist and mag length issues if you want the heavy bullets. I've probably got one of the very first of them, and I've killed piles of deer with 120's, including the long-ish TTSX. But it comes up short on the 147's. The CM is a better mousetrap in the 84.
With enough magbox and twist the 260 is going to offer a little more speed than a Creed, but functionally it's identical.

Yup. Make it a daily habit to look all over the web for a 223. Pounce on it when found. Sell the Bob.

I've been out of the loop enjoying gear I already have.

What is the deal with 223 Montanas and Fieldcrafts in general? I gather both are in short supply. Discontinued or just scarce?

Either way I am happy I got all I needed when the getting was good.

Did anybody pick up one of the Montana's in the green stock with the threaded barrel?

I like the ergos of the 84M's better than anything I've touched, but don't want to rebarrel my .308...

I'd just as soon hold out for one of those as to buy something just to rebarrel it...but I am curious if there's much difference in the Adirondack or the Mountain Ascent...

Has anyone done a comparison of those 3?

223 Montana’s and fieldcrafts have been discontinued and can be hard to find at a reasonable price, that being said I found a NIB 06 fieldcraft last week for $1450. They are out there . You never know where or when you will find one.
