I just got this back a couple days ago and got to shoot it today. It's wearing a #2 Shilen SS 1-8, cut to 20" and threaded.

So far it feeds everything I give it, thought I will probably block the magazine and shorten the follower.

I am going to have to put some paint on that shiny barrel.

Oh yea, removed the windage knob and added the high dollar cap. Forgot the blue tape. LOL

I am starting off with the 58 VMAX, and the 60gr Sierra HP. Also have some Sierra 70BK's. A friend out west says he liked Barnes TSX said they were pretty fur friendly. Right now, I am not too worried about fur.

LDI did a longer throated 6BR for me on a 700. It's wearing a 1-8 Brux, longer barrel. Gonna play with some 105's in it.

factory stock, with some " Custom rattlecan camo". :)

I have the Kimber 223 on the other table, with the factory barrel bobbed and threaded at 18"

The BR is a kimber too. Very cool. I didn't look that close. No wonder I liked the looks of the stock. Nothing matches the ergos of those stocks for me.

I got to shoot both yesterday out to 300. That's about the farthest I shoot at coyotes. I'm using IMR 8208XBR in both. I am pretty happy with the small groups. Using 69gr bullets in the factory chamber 223, it is not very flat shooting. Zeroed 1" high at 100, I get .3 mil drop at 200 and 1.o mil drop at 300. I figure that makes it at about 2800 fps at the muzzle.

The 6 BR is better with the 58gr bullets. 1" high at 100, zeroed at 200 and .6 mils at 300, which makes me think it is doing 3400 fps at the muzzle. Next trip to the range, I will have to try the 105's. Just because. But I have to work out of town after Christmas so it will be a while.

Seriously thinking of going 223 IMP on the next build, since I just sold a Sucks 223Imp with a Douglas 1-8. Probably should have hung onto that one.

I was surprised how well a #2 Shilen fit on the Montana. I have a Rem 700 with a #2 Shilen chambered in 204 Ruger, but that one is 24" long, 1-10 twist.

Dude I am a big fan of the Kimbers myself. But My favorite stocks probably are the McMillam Hunter and the Classic.

Sure would. A Barrett 22-250 7 twist was creeping onto the want list when they changed to 1:8. Now I'm not as sure.
A mini-action FC 223 with 1:7 is arriving soon - with a 2.436" COAL. Hopefully that matches a throat that likes 88's. And it actually MIGHT, since Barrett seems to get shit right most of the time.

Max COAL to the lands in a SAAMI 223 chamber with a 75 eld is around 2.430-2.435, so I would guess the Barrett mag box will necessitate jumping the 88's. Feel free to correct me if my dimensions are wrong, but I believe Barrett may have skimped on the mag box dimensions unless their reamer has a shorter freebore than standard 223. If that's the case they would still have failed IMO.

I'm hoping I'm wrong but that was my first thought when I looked at the numbers.

Exactly my worry. A 223 with 75's isn't suffering, but bullets grow a little every year. And 223/88 is like a mini 6x45. Which is appealing. If I ever get the barrel on my Montana killed I could have just what I want there, and in AI, with the new tube.

2.436" is too short for 88's...but MIGHT smooch a 75 ELD.

I shoot 88's in a 8" 224 Kreedmire happily,at low tide and frozen temps. There's enough RPM increase over a 22-250,to assure such things.

I'd not want a 22-250 and especially in a 3" box(better choices to utilize that latitude).

Forgot to hit "send" on this, early this morning.................

Too bad on the Fieldcraft. Sounds like the action is going to be sized JUST big enough, so there won't be any chance to open it up for longer COAL. If it runs with 75's I may still do it, but I doubt it.

Sure would! It'll be interesting to see how far they go on right-sizing the bolt for 223, and if there's enough meat left to open it up for larger base cartridges if they go smaller on diameter.

Are the Howa mags decent?

Me and a bud have been trying to talk each other into turning on into a 6 gren.

Proprietary bullshit.

The 6 Grendel is a fucking hammer and Lapooey brass has been exceptionally good...................

I’m still slumming no less than 3 mini’s with factory Grendel barrels I bought for donors for 22 and 6 Grendel’s. The mags aren’t horrid but they are THE stumbling block for me going any further. DIP makes bottom metal and I sure as shit wish they’d make a floorplate version.

CDI lists a conversion to AICS mags but I've never heard any details.

I bet it don't suck. I'd be happier with AR mags in 224 and 243 Grendel,in 264 the AICS will certainly do favors...........

I bought a Howa mini in 223, I thought it had the floor plate, but it came with that ignorant propriety mag. I may get rid of it.

If one steps back and looks at all manufacturer's efforts...it's rather fucking AMAZING,just how shitty of a job they do connecting dots................

And it fits in one sentence:
"Loaded for the longest bullet available, the completed round must touch the lands in a properly twisted barrel and fit in the mag box with .100" space for throat wear."

Maybe 100 thou is debatable; pick a number.

But these manufacturers still deliver rifles with stocks designed for iron sights and chambered for rounds that hold North of 100 grains of water.

Question for you guys running BR cartridges in a 700. Is bushing your bolt necessary? I've been dragging my feet in sending a 223 bolt to shooter71 for same work. Wondering if I should throw a .473" bolt to get done, in case it becomes a 6br in the future.
Thanks

700's are reliably the WORST offenders, regarding pin "fit"/slop.

NOBODY "regrets" bushing a bolt!

Hint.................(grin)

Didn't do mine. Personally, the 6BR is all bullet/BC - chasing high velocity via high pressure isn't the point. Shoot a 243 or bigger if speed is the goal.

Running 105 lapoo
29.60gr of Vargay
2739 FPS / 22 inch barrel
100m 0
200m 1.75
300m 4.25
400m 8.50
500m 11.75
600m 15.50

Makes for a very accurate dial and dump rainbow.

But not really That good when dogs are running for their life.

Much to be said for Beaver Dope staring one in the face and a reticle that actually does sumptin'.(grin)

With a 200yd zero,the MQ will get my shortest 6BR to 1000yds+,with a 105 Hornie HPBT.

Hint..............(grin)
