Had a bit of an adventure when experimenting with bluedot loads. The good news is I avoided injury. The bad news is I need a new Rem 700 bolt with a .223 boltface. Anyone have one, or know where I might find one?

eBay, or PTG. Although I won't by anything from PTG that I actually need, because they lie about every godamn thing they do.

what happened?

i'm about 2k into blue dot loads. never exceed 18gr with 243, or about 15.5 with a 6br.

13 to 13.5gr with an 80gr absolutely hammers out of the 6br.

I don’t have the load notes in front of me, but I was running a velocity ladder. It went from fine to really not really quick. Welded the case head into the bolt face. Persuaded the bolt open with a dead blow hammer. Had a machinist buddy clean it up, and the outer ring/ nose of the bolt head is cracked.

Glad you didn't get hurt and that a bolt is on the way.

IME, pistol powders in a rifle case isn't a matter of if something is going to happen but when it's going to happen.

The only pistol powders I use in rifle cases are without bullets. Like these fifty 30BR cases I f-formed today from virgin Lapua 6BR:

I'm with Al on this one too.

I dabbled in the Blue Dot loads for a while but they go from fine to holy shit way to quickly for me.

I made up some reduced 223 loads for the kiddo when he was younger with 4198 that were a lot more forgiving

yeah, I like the idea of reduced loads, but this method has me tapping the brake! When I was younger, I used IMR 4227, and it seemed to work pretty well, but that was before chronos, so I really have no idea what sort of performance I was getting.

i've only run blue dot in 223, 6br and 243 so can't say anything about how they do across a huge spectrum.

in 243 with 58gr vmax and about 12gr was awesome.

6br shoots little bitty holes with 13gr and a fb 80gr.
