So I've got the urge to put together something compact and handy, but I want to get a few opinions on stock choice. What got me going was this picture from the 'fire.

It's a 20" youth 243 lefty in a Hunter's Edge. The guy claims it goes 6.75lbs as shown. I'm looking to spin off the MR contour barrel from my SS 260 and will be swapping on a standard contour SS 7mm-08 take-off barrel that I'll have cut at 20". Assuming an ADL setup with alloy Talleys and a 12oz Leupold, I'm wondering if I could get by with standard fill and gel-coat on that same stock pattern. I know it will add about 7-8oz, so it will likely affect balance. Overall weight of 6.75lbs vs 7.25lbs is no big deal, but I want it to feel right.

Problem solved. $175 Compact standard fill pattern on the specials page is headed my way. Will have to slum olive paint, oversized guard screw holes and #3contour BDL inlet, but I can fill whatever might need filling. Maybe enough money left over to run an aftermarket tube......

damn- nice snag. I'm about to screw a 18" .222 600 mohawk barrel onto an action I've got sitting here. Will punch it .223AI and se tthe whole thing into a shortened Ti. I'll have a truck gun for now, 'till the little one gets old enough to burp brass. havn't weighed the components yet, but I expect it'll be rather handy, if less classy than yours.

Those Mohawks were accurate little rifles, although I've never shot one in .224.

BTW, should anybody be interested, McMillan has more Compacts and Tikka patterns (Sako Hunter) at that $175 shipped price. All #3 BDL inlets, all with paint.

The one headed my way is inletted with 1/2" screw holes for pillars. I've never done them but am familiar with the concept. Is it easier to go ahead and install them or just pour pillars with Devcon during the bedding job?

Helluva snag on those stocks. You will have a great rig when done. Probably overkill but I have had pillars installed on mine and they are quite nice.

Yep, filled in checkering panels. I was tempted when they were $250, but held off.
