Fished Seward with relatives in mid-August, a full month after I'm used to wrapping things up. Not knowing where to go, I defaulted to my Harris Bay silver hole. Silver fishing was spotty but okay, but then we ran over about a half hour of king chaos. Hot lure was a funky plug sold by PN&T in Richmond, BC. It's shaped like a 5" tomic, but is made by yo-zuri. Slightly smaller front bill, permanent tow ring, and a pin that can't be pulled. I like to rig plugs with pins pulled, but this seemed to work fine as it got the three large fish of the four. Chartreuse painted back, ruby pearl insert in the clear plastic sides. First time I ever pulled it. We ran out of king tags, as relatives didn't get them four our four day fishing bender ($$$ for uncertain king fishing). Wife long-arming the big one in the 20s: Endsley pose with the same: The other three:

Nice work, Vek. Four kings in one day is pretty damn good fishing! How do you like that 225 on the Hewescraft? What kind of mileage are you getting? Are you planning on doing any boat-based hunting this fall or in the spring?
I managed to scrounge up a king a few weeks ago in PWS, down by Applegate. We were trolling for silvers, but dropped a downrigger down to 115, just to see what was hanging out on the fish finder screen. Chris hooked it, but he immediately passed the rod off to a guest we had on the boat. She fought it for quite a while, before steering it into the net. This was her first trip to Alaska, so she was pretty stoked.

225 works fine. Depending on load and fuel level, 4400rpm cruise (just under vtec kick-in) gets 23.5 - 25 knots. It's also really happy cruising 4600-4800 at up to 28 knots if loaded light for a fishin mission.
A good representative fuel burn measurement trip on flat water was our first run to the toe of montague from whittier this year - burned 75 gallons with no side-trips. That's what, 85 nautical miles each way? Have burned up to 105 on a similar trip, but that's with an overnight at Fox Farm or Port Ashton and rougher water. Prop is the original solas 14.25 x 17 3-blade with no cup and it slips a bit. I'm thinking the boat might like a 15p or 16p 4-blade with the motor mounted higher, but hey, it works.
Probably no on the hunting. I might wander down to Homer as they've been hitting some kings down there, but we'll see.
