Looking at adding a water filter to the kit for extended hunting trips. Anyone have experience with either the Katadyn or MSR products?

I've run a pair of MSR's, the Hyperfilter and the older model. Also have a steripen.....

The hyperfilter has a bunch of mixed reviews. I like it, as it sucks up water like a motherfucker from spots you can't get a bottle into.....

And the hyper will fill a 1l nalgene in about 10 seconds. Not to mention being able to screw a standard pop bottle onto it. Or just fill up a bladder.....

I have a platypus gravity filter. So far, it's been really good to me I really have no reason to change. I like it because I can put some water in it, sit down and glass and when I'm thirsty it's ready to go.

Haven't tried too many other models though.

Aqua Mira drops for me. But, I've never been where water isn't easy to come by.

The month before when we peeked into this valley this exact spot would have been hard to stand on due to water volume. Came back solo, and this was the ONLY water I could find in the valley near where I was spiked out. The little basin held a lot more water than I would have anticipated, think I pulled about 5 litres from it, and there wouldn't of been any chance in hell of collecting it any other way.

Saw those reviews on the MSR hyperflow filter. Looks like the filters can be damaged by freezing. Went with the old school MSR miniworks filter for now but have a hankering for one of those hyperflows. Probably get one just for backup or the hell of it. Steripen on it's way also as I hate the the taste of chemically treated water. Actually "hate" doesn't come near what I think of that stuff.

I have an MSR hyperflow and haven't used it much. I'm also nearly always close to a creek or pond or something. What little I have used it, it seems like it works exactly as it is advertised to.

My most used filters are the Sawyer inlines. They are relatively slow but take up little space and last pretty well. In a pinch you can plumb one to a bottle or bladder and take pulls on the move.

You know, I'd read that more than a few places. Then the gf's miniworks msr filter fucked up and she went and scooped another one about a week before I was leaving on a sheep trip, and came back with the hyperfilter. Really not sure how a guy could fuck up and freeze one. Other than maybe if a guy was fucking around in some extreme cold and it froze as you were taking it out of the water and folded the filter or something maybe I guess, but if it's that cold, I'm heading home anyway.......

Not sure myself. I'll have both to use and eventually find out how to fucking break.
