Chambered up. Now to verify the H/S with the barrel torqued up on the receiver. As a std practice, I don't use N/GO gauges. Instead I prefer to use the GO gauge in conjunction with a little sliver of solder. The solder gets squished between the bolt face and the gauge when its all clammed up. This way I have a qualified dimension to document. Saves my bacon if a gun ever comes back with goofy headspace. It'll tell us if the cst had an oops at the reloading bench and gassed up a round too hot. On some cartridges like the big stuff for Africa the lugs will peen back over time. We saw this often at Dakota Arms. 20 year old guns with lots of notches under the belt that had actually set back the lugs. Not a deal breaker as it just takes fitting a new stick to it. Just nice to have the documentation from day one so a guy knows what's going on.

So you measure the thickness of the squished solder for your reference?

Yep. Goes something like this.
A GO and NO GO gauge typically has a range of about .006" for most cartridges.
With the solder I have "invented" a value system we use in the shop. Say the bolt drops on the GO and sticks on the NO GO. That's great, but where is it at inside that .006" window? The solder tells us exactly. A value of .0025" for instance would be documented as "GO +.0025" ". Meaning it's good on the GO with an additional .0025" of clearance.
If the rifle came back a week, month, year, etc later with a headspace of "GO+.007" we now have a true dimension to reference from. If it was GO+.0025 the headspace increased by .0045". Obviously something changed. Hot load, soft bolt/receiver, a barrel that came off and wasn't torqued back on to the original assembled level, etc.
Solder has virtually zero tensile strength. Meaning in its wire form if squished, it'll stay squished. This makes it a cheap/useful tool for gauging things like this. I do the same thing with breech clearance. leave the calculators and all the fancy math alone as this gives a "real world" value instead of a mathematical one.
Hope this helps.
C.

We finished up the barreled action Saturday. 20lbs of ass kickin! I spent the weekend building my bullet trap. 16"x48" piece of well casing stitched up to a frame on casters. Filled it up with sand and woo hoo. We can shoot inside now. Tested so far with a 300 Win Mag. Rattles the fillings out your teeth! Were gonna wheel it outside later and test fire the 50 through it. Should be fun! Here's the pics of the boomer going together. I don't have my press/dies yet. They are on the way. I decided to take a stab at making a turned bullet. Downloaded a pic of the Hornady Amax, washed it through the software, typed out some code, and gave it a try using annealed brass. My first piece was .0012" undersize and came in -13.5 grains from the targeted 750. I think when I bump the tool offset the .0012" it'll be much closer to the correct weight. Perty cool. Were gonna shoot it with these and save the expensive ones for the range on Shawn's rifle. Here's the pics:

Nice......looks better than I figured!......I weighted the stock, just under 6 lbs, with a 16x mark 4 the total package should weight in at around 28 lbs......
Hopefully we may be shooting it this weekend!

Test fire went well! My bullet trap survived! The tube is 48" long. Bullet penetrated 36+ of sand before coming to rest. We dug it out just to see what it looked like.
Boxing her up now killer.
She'll leave in the am.

Should mount that thing on a boat. Why would you mount a bullet trap on a boat? Just shoot it into the water if your on a boat.

That is good stuff there, I can like that alot. That barrel looks good, mine might look a little anemic, tell that kid to light it up. Now to clean the snow off the deck all you have to do is stick the barrel out the kitchen window and comence firing.

Saw Baby Bean in passing,as I headed to the bus,but never had a chance to talk to him. The Great One just called and he just got his new Lilja 243Win spout outta the Mail, for his big Gas Gun back from Old Reliable, who fluted the shit outta it to reduce weight. He was screaming over the phone,it is so fucking good and I'm not doubting it. Loading shovels in my crummy now, charging the FoxPro and flinging rifles and ammo into the back seat. Flying home just an hour ago, there looked to be a little snow, but doable to the auxillary Pet Shop. Here's an idea(shot the pic a few minutes ago) and it was yet another 100+ ambient temp swing, betwixt my porch and work yesterday. Fucking breeze yesterday was brutal! Hope you enjoy it.(grin) I'll tie a Booner to a tree and you bring that Giant CockaDoodleDoo down for a Cheerio Poke....................

If this is what second place feels like, I can like that.
Next one will be a heavy barrel like humpers.

I talked to Kyle at Brux yesterday, sounds like my 458 barrel was ready to be fluted, I should have tried the skip flute on that one. I bet it will still shoot.

Good snare!....6-284 thinking might be a good one...
I have that 22-250 AI with a Brux 1-8 #2 flutted in a classic mcm stock, didn't shoot real good at first but after about 25 rounds down it, it's shooting right at .5 moa now!

Bennysahn loves his Bruxeses. The 6-284 might come together quicker than I thought,as I was able to sniff out lotsa parts that were ready to roll. The stock(Urban Camo Sako Hunter) will be the longest wait, but it isn't like I don't have a few extra McMillans laying around.
Had a good chat with a Gun Plumber yesterday and it was music to my ears, that once he gets a new reamer,he cuts a chamber into a barrel stub and goes to madly making dummies that kiss it's throat, with every boolit he can get his hands on,so he can pinpoint a COAL kiss. Why in the fuck everyone doesn't do that, blows me the fuck away. He typically throats separate in regards to most things, but do have some reamers wearing a throat that is short.
Nice to be able to fire a dummy round off at a given COAL and have someone knock it outta the park. I'm thinking 2.925" COAL to a 105A-Max kiss in the 6-284,which will grant a .060" cushion to chase lands in the magazines(DBM) and even more wiggle room with Hornie's new 105HPBT,which actually has an even better BC(.530).
You'll want one....................(grin)
