With talleys, I stop tightening when the torx wrench they ship with starts to twist. It's a free torque wrench.

I'm a great fan of putting the what is to fasteners and firmly believe in the approach and would not drive a rifle that wasn't dressed in that accord.

Bridge height woe is an issue far seperate from torque values and it are those woes, that got you.

I've no qualm shimming things square either,or bedding................

I recall that for some reason the reticle assembly is located a bit differently than in the other Leupold scopes.
I installed a 6x42 on a solid steel base with Warne rings on a muzzle loader. Did my usual tighten damn tight and upon completion had a broke reticle.
Sent the scope out, got a lapping bar, lapped the rings pretty dang good, remounted the scope, broke the reticle in 15 shots.
Sent scope out again, really lapped the crap out of the rings, gingerly tightened the rings this time and all was well.
Bought another 6x42 and put it on my M70 300 WSM in S&K rings. This rifle I did check for bridge height/screw hole alignment as there was some fuss going on over the internet pertaining to such. All was copacetic. Put maybe 100 rounds through that rifle and all was well. Took it out of the safe after a bunch of months, glanced through the scope and another broken reticle. Switched to Burris signature rings and so far so good.
I consider the 6x42 much more susceptible to a broken reticle from same stress than any other Leupold scopes. I have a few and love them but they are the only scope I do worry about fastener tightness and having very very well fit rings.
I can also say from experience that a broken reticle will still hold it's POI and adjusts just fine so it isn't a game over scenario.FWIW.

Can't read the link, but the reticle cell is in the ass, near the ocular lock ring.

Their generous eye-relief often grants that locale being interfaced with a mounting ring and misalgnment due to bridge woes,can/will toast the cell.

In fact this can happen with a lot of 6x scopes, because the optics of 6x demand a rearward reticle cell. But the major factor is tightening rings too much, something that's very common. Most mount manufacturers recommend 15-20 inch-pounds of torque for their scope rings.

This isn't much. If you just hold the handfle of the screwdriver from above with the thumb and first two fingers of your hand, it's hard to create more than 20 inch-pounds. Or at least this is true for an average guy.

First, the reticle cell is located just in front of the eyepiece. This is almost universally true of full-size 6x scopes with second focal-plane reticle. If you put the rear ring there, and then screw it down "farmer right" (as many of us do, and I used to) it will break the reticle, or at least stress it so much that it tends to break.

In the decade or so since I broke a 6x42's reticle twice, I have never had another problem with a 6x Leupold, and I have hunted with them a LOT.

Yep. I recall JB talking about that.

The "hard to create 20in/lbs for the avg. guy" thing cracks me up. I could twist that fucker till it collapsed with 3 fingers, as I'm sure a few here could also.......
