Our old Sony died the other day, so we're going to buy a new one tomorrow while the town is having a 'sales tax free' day.

I'm leaning towards a Panasonic plasma but it doesn't support the 1080p format. We don't do anything fancy with the our tv, just dvd videos and cable tv.

I'm thinking we don't need the 1080p deal, but thought I'd ask, as I hear rumor some of you actually live in the real world. :)

Thanks.

My boss has one that is the best I have ever seen, don't believe it is a plasma. In fact it is more a 'monitor' than a tv, so to speak.

We weren't home but I'll check with him later.

A "monitor" is the same thing as a tv except it doesn't have a tuner built in ... If the tv is a flat panel but is not a plasma then it's an LCD which is still very nice ... LG and Samsung both make incredible TVs ... And a 720x tv is plenty high quality mainly because there are not that many broadcasts in 1080x right now ...

A monitor ain't the same as a TV.

I lied, his is a 50" Maxent Plasma, he bought it at the Juneau Cosco, compared to the others they had he said it blew them away. I'd love to watch HD porn on one.

DLP is only available on rear projection LCD televisions ... And the only thing that makes a monitor different than a tv is that the tv has a tuner built in and a monitor doesn't ...

Plasma is different than LCD - and which generation of plasma it is makes a huge difference ...

Newer plasmas are much nicer and are not nearly as prone to getting picture burn in as the old ones .. LCD seems to be more clear on the smaller tv's ... But plasma rules in the 46" and bigger realm ...

Okay, so I'm learning that 1080p ain't such a big deal, unles you're a purest. Still leaning towards plasma over lcd, as 'blacks' are suppose to be 'blacker' and the picture better over all.

That said, if I see a nice priced lcd, I could go that route as well.

I have 42" Samsung LCD that is excellent.

You can get a lot of good info off CNET.com and also consumer reports. The Visios form COstco are supposed ot be pretty good also at a lot better price than the big names. I did a lot of research prior to buying ours last year and decided LCD was best for our use.

I have a 60" Sony SXRD flatscreen and the picture quality is amazing. You can get HD quality channels from Dish and local cable, but the real clarity comes with dvd's. You have to get a dvd player that has 1080P capability, as well as the correct cable to tie it in. I didn't have the right cable and once I switched, the change was amazing.

I got my tv from Sear's a year ago today. They had a sale going on where the 60" was only $100 more than the 50". That was a no brainer.

ain't up on the technical gig on tv's, only get 1 channel and don't watch it much at all.

But quite a few years ago we added to our surround sound stereo one of them big bastid screen tv's to the system and NO it ain't flat.

Had to put new carpet downstairs recently so hauled that big azz TV upstairs, all of a sudden those big screen flat TV's seemed a lot more reasonably priced than when I was spying them at Sam's Club!

Can a TV gain weight over the years like a human?

Kids mom just got one of the flat screen TV's (not mondo, 32" IIRC) looks pretty slick, but I'll have to wait for the big one to die before I part with the jingle.

No more than it's on it may last awhile, or it could slip on the way back downstairs!

Having to move the old behemoths around is certainly motivation for purchasing the new styles!

Done deal. Picked up (literally) a 42" LG Plasma. Picture is okay with the regular cable channels. Looks better when playing a dvd. I understand I can upgrade my cable service to HD, and it will be much better.

Brian:
Bought a Sony 40" 1080P and it must be tough because it sat down on the runway in the village for awhile before I could get down and get it. Stand is too small so had to strap it down because the house moves so much in our balmy breezes.
I wanted the 1080P thing so I would be current longer than a long weekend. Really don't think its that big a deal over 1080i or 720p but the price really wasn't that much different. Blue Ray is the nuts but really isn't much in 1080p games yet.
