I am thinking of pulling the 308 barrel off my Montana and having a 6.5CM done up. Looking at bugholes site and there is a 2b contour in 1-8.5 twist.

1. Will the 147gr Hornady shoot good in a 1-8.5 or do i need a faster twist like a 1-8?

2. Will the 2b contour fit in the Montana stock without a lot of modification? If not what size should I get? I'm fine with Brux and Mullerworks too. :)

You wanna dupe whatcha got and lose some shank.

8" is your friend.

Buy a Barrett.

So will Benchmark.

In all cases, start off by inquiring if they have the requisite bore/twist/groove you're after sitting on the shelf. They will generally be able to spin such a blank down to your desired contour much faster than waiting for a special order....

Is the bat cave back in action? Don't want to call and bug him if he's done, done.

What did yo rebarrel to and how did the lilja treat you ?
270Win, 1:8 3-groove @ 22". Shooting 150LRAB's @ 3050fps via '26. I've shot a couple of ~1/2" 3-shot 200yds groups and a 4" 600yd 3-shot group. So far it's been great, I've got about 75 shots down the tube and killed a 6x4 rag horn bull elk and a mid-140" whitetail since the beginning of Nov. Headed out on Sunday for the week with 1 more buck tag to fill.

I loved my Lilja-barreled .280AI. Mine was a #1 Contour on a M700, but I'm pretty sure Lilja will dupe the factory Montana contour.

Out of curiosity, are you looking for more twist or more precision out of your Montana?

Would you do a kraut 7x57AI on a long action montana?

Batcave Dave's 280AI reamer has a long-ish throat...I'm out close to 3.6" with 162 amax.

It'd be viable, for certain...though obviously not my jam.

Tough to beat 105's and no recoil at 3400fps,with no bullshit............

Well, I pulled the barrel on my Kimber Montana 243. My friend has a lathe so we cut off the old chamber and rechambered to 6XC, shortened the barrel to around 19". It was going to be 20 inches but the lathe got accidentally setup to cut 1/2" x 24 threads and had to cut off and redo to 1/2"x28. I don't have a horizontal mill so I had to dykum the barrel and cut the extractor slot with a freaking file. :) But it works. Whole setup with the can is 7lbs5oz. I think this will be a fun coyote rifle. Later I may make it a 6 BR. I'm trying to find Sticks thread on making it feed in my Montana.

My reloading room is pretty messy, so don't hold that against me. What do you suggest I reload for it?

I believe Kimber has the slower 1-10 twist in their 6mm tubes. I guess I can shoot 87 VMAX and shorter. I have a bunch of moly'd 65 and 75 VMAX's I'll give a try. If I don't like this barrel, or when I wear it out I'll get a Brux or perhaps Bartlien, I like their barrels, and make this a 6BR. I am still sitting on the fence about retubing a 223 to 6x45 also.

A 6mm Montana is indeed 10-twisted. 90 Scenars will generally group into nasty little knots. 80 & 85 X's seriously hammer critters.

I didn't think about the scenars, but have been reminded that the 80's and 85 Barnes were great also. thanx

Yea, I'll put a 1-8 twist on it later. I'm going to play with the factory barrel for now. My other 3, 6XC's have 1-8 barrels on them.

This rifles primary purpose was for coyotes and occasional deer. I rarely shoot further than 150-200 yards where I hunt. That has also got me seriously looking to make a fast twist 6x45 ( uh 270) on a Montucky 223.

A Montucky 6XC that shines at 1000yds+...ain't gonna suck at the 25yd line. Hint.(grin)

Same goes a 270 and everything else. NOTHING matters more than bullets.

A Montucky 270 is a hoot with 105/8's and I assuredly LOVE mine...............

I have a 1-12 twist 6x45, but a 1-8 would be next. I don't really GAF about barrel life, they are threaded and replaceable. However the little 6 should damn near run forever.
